At Eatwith, we believe that food is a universal language, one that connects people, cultures, and, importantly, the planet. That’s why we launched the Eco-Hero initiative in April 2022. This sustainability-driven program was designed to empower our hosts to embrace greener practices while providing meaningful experiences to guests. Travel can be a powerful force for sustainability—by choosing to dine with hosts who support local initiatives and have sustainable cooking practices, you can savor authentic experiences while making a positive impact on the planet.
Let’s explore how this initiative is making a difference and how you, too, can Eatwith a purpose.
What Is the Eco-Hero Initiative?
The Eco-Hero initiative was born out of two key observations.
First, today’s travelers and diners increasingly seek ways to act responsibly and make sustainable choices and secondly, many of our hosts are creating eco-friendly experiences or are eager to adopt more sustainable practices.
To support this movement, we developed a sustainability label called "Eco-Hero." It helps our hosts evaluate and improve their green practices, from sourcing ingredients to managing waste. This initiative not only fosters a vibrant community of Eco-Heroes and Eco-Warriors but also inspires continuous innovation in sustainable hosting. By connecting mindful diners with eco-conscious hosts, we’re creating a ripple effect of positive change, proving that every small effort contributes to a healthier planet. Each host’s commitment adds up, making a collective impact, one meal at a time.
Why Sustainable Eating Matters
Food is the bridge between the Earth and our bodies, making it a central player in sustainability. The EAT-Lancet Commission’s groundbreaking research highlights the profound impact of dietary choices on planetary health. A sustainable food system benefits the economy, society, and the environment—or as we like to say, “products, people, and planet.”
The Link Between Food and Climate Change
The production, transportation, and consumption of food contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the livestock sector accounts for 18% of emissions, surpassing even the transport sector. Additionally, industrial fisheries emit as much CO2 globally as the aviation industry, making sustainable seafood choices critical.
Switching to plant-based diets, sourcing locally, and choosing seasonal produce are impactful ways to lower your carbon footprint. These small but meaningful changes not only reduce emissions but also foster a deeper connection with our food sources. As UN experts emphasize, shifting our eating habits can create a cascade of positive effects for the planet. Every choice matters, and together, we can make a difference, one meal at a time.
The Pillars of Sustainable Food Experiences
Our Eco-Hero initiative is built on three pillars—products, planet, and people—that guide our hosts toward creating greener and more impactful experiences.
1. Products: Celebrating Local and Seasonal Ingredients
Sustainability starts with the ingredients. We encourage our hosts to:
Source locally: Shorter supply chains mean fresher ingredients, reduced emissions, and stronger local economies.
Embrace seasonality: Seasonal produce is more flavorful, nutritious, and eco-friendly.
Reduce waste: From using every part of an ingredient to composting scraps, minimizing food waste is crucial.
Pro tip: Calculate the carbon footprint of your meals using a food carbon footprint calculator.
2. Planet: Reducing Environmental Impact
From embracing the 5 R’s of zero waste to eliminating plastic, there are endless ways to minimize environmental impact. Start by reducing single-use plastics in tableware and packaging. Opt for organically grown foods to avoid harmful pesticides. Save energy by using greener cooking methods and appliances. As Bea Johnson, a zero-waste advocate, reminds us, "The point of sustainability is not to recycle more but to recycle less. Let’s begin by refusing what we don’t need."
3. People: Building Inclusive and Fair Communities
Sustainability isn’t just about the environment; it’s also about people. A socially sustainable food experience builds local communities, celebrates cultural traditions, and ensures fair trade and ethical sourcing. It recognizes the value of fair wages and fosters meaningful connections between individuals. Without people, there is no sustainability. That’s why transparency and inclusivity are at the heart of our Eco-Hero initiative.
How Eatwith Hosts Become Eco-Heroes
To earn the Eco-Hero label, hosts complete a self-evaluation based on research-backed criteria. Depending on their scores, they’ll either receive an external badge to showcase their efforts or an internal tag to encourage further growth. Our community team supports hosts with resources, tips, and inspiration through blogs, newsletters, and social media campaigns.
Starting this January 2025, we’re launching our second Eco-Hero campaign to spotlight the innovative ways our hosts are greening their experiences. Stay tuned for inspiring stories and practical advice!
We also support sustainable initiatives like the global-known Veganuary month in the UK and locavore movements around the globe.
