Want to get away but don’t know where to go? Planning a getaway can be daunting because of the many places to go and activities to do. However, with its enchanting city landscapes, beautiful beaches, and sunny weather, Barcelona might just be the perfect destination for your summer vacation.

There are plenty of things to do in Barcelona in the summer. We’re here to share tips from our top Barcelona host, Rudi, to help you plan the perfect summer vacation.

Who is Rudi?

Host Rudi's Barcelona Supper Club

Rudi is a professional chef, based in Barcelona, who hosts incredible dining experiences. His most popular event is a Nine Course Spanish-Latin American Fusion Feast. Having always dreamt of opening his own Venezuelan-Mediterranean restaurant, he has found his way to make that a reality.

Rudi’s flavorful Caribbean cooking is paired with organic Catalan wines and craft beer from the Costa Brava. Each dish served is gracefully presented and environmentally friendly!

Rudi has been an Eatwith host since 2013 and has enjoyed each and every dining experience. He absolutely loves “to have people that don't know each other all at one table, bonding over food, sharing stories and laughs, and having a great time.” His goal has always been to perfect and improve his recipes, and hosting these dinners is the best way to do that.

Summer Dining with a Local in Barcelona

As a host, providing the best hospitality is a very important part of Rudi’s job. To him, hospitality is all about “creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for guests, and making them feel at home.”

During the summer months he believes it’s important to “embrace the warmth and energy of the season by cooking with the best produce, fruits, and seafood of the summertime.” It is key to make sure each dish is light and refreshing!

The Perfect Summer Afternoon in Barcelona

According to our host Rudi, one of the best ways to spend a summer afternoon in Barcelona is to visit one of its many parks. The shade of the trees and cool breeze offer an escape from the intense midday heat.

Rudi recommends Parc de la Ciutadella or the renowned Park Güell, where you can explore Gaudi’s beautiful work. Note that certain parts of the park can be accessed with no fee, but to enter others you need to book in advance.

Rudi also recommends enjoying a “pre-dinner cocktail in one of the many rooftop terraces or in the famous cocktail bar Paradiso”. His favorite is a new whiskey bar in the city center called La Whiskeria.

Bring your summer's day to a close with an indulgent Spanish meal–you’ll find dining options in Barcelona are endless! The city boasts seaside bars, restaurants that cater to every palate, and markets overflowing with fresh and local produce that you can use to cook your own meal.

Although they can be a bit touristy, Rudi considers Mercado Boqueria, Mercado Santa Caterina, and Mercado San Antoni as must-see places if you’re a true foodie. Keep in mind that they close around 5 or 6pm, so plan your visits accordingly.

Best Summer Spots, Tips, and Inspiration for Your Barcelona Trip

A visit to Barcelona is not complete without a trip to the beach. Basking in the sun and unwinding on a sunny summer day at Barceloneta Beach is bliss.

Having lived here for over 10 years, Rudi advises to go during the morning or evening hours to avoid the heat. He stresses the importance of “using enough sunscreen, avoiding tourist traps, and rehydrating as much as you can.”

If you prefer escaping the crowds and treating yourself to something different, he recommends making “a 20-minute trip to Castelldefels and you will find much nicer beaches with less people, and a little cheaper prices at the surrounding restaurants and bars.” As highlighted before, rooftop bars and parks, which are abundant in Barcelona, are always a great option for the summertime!
